LNG Liquid Gas Tanks, Manzanillo, Mexico

90-metre circular tanks climbed in 2-week cycles

The gas and steam turbine power stations on the Pacific coast are fed with natural gas supplied mainly from domestic sources, complemented however by imported liquid natural gas. In the port of Manzanillo, a new LNG terminal with two liquid gas tanks was therefore developed. These are used for regasification purposes - converting back into a gaseous form - and storage.

Both circular tanks, with an inside diameter of 86.40 m and almost 40 m high, were constructed at the same time using in-situ concreting operations. PERI´s Mexican engineers provided the construction team a cost-effective but efficient climbing formwork solution with the VARIO GT 24 girder wall formwork system and CB 240 climbing scaffold. Four pilasters were taken into consideration during the planning, which are designed to strengthen the 65 cm thick ring walls. In addition, the VARIO system allowed the tie positions to be flexibly adapted to the static requirements and the numerous mounting parts. Together with the type-tested CB climbing scaffold system, the formwork and scaffold could be moved using only one crane pick from cycle to cycle. In each case, two VARIO panels together with a CB platform formed one climbing unit. PERI supplied the 2.80 m wide and 4.30 m high VARIO panels already pre-assembled to the construction site. Specially-constructed additional infill spaces between the GT 24 formwork girders and SRZ steel walers ensured a very accurate plywood formlining curvature. Frictionlocked connections between the steel walers were achieved by means of VARIO articulated couplings. PERI UP site stair towers for safe access of all working platforms up to a height of 40 m as well as DK sealing cones as a reliable sealing system for tie positions supplemented the comprehensive PERI solution.
